In Arashiyama, in Kyoto, there is a monkey park. I’m sort of an animal person, and I hate zoos. This is not a zoo. These are wild monkeys given free roam of a beautiful mountain side. Visitors are allowed to walk through, with the understanding that they can’t so much as stare at the monkeys. They are allowed to bask in the monkeys’ proximity. You can feed the monkeys, but only from inside a metal cage (for the humans) and only approved fruits and vegetables.
It’s pretty great. There are about 130 wild monkeys in this area. Proceeds from tickets go to upkeep of the park, and study of the monkeys. And the view of the city is breathtaking. Next time you’re in Kyoto, put this on the must see list.
